The first airline ticket I ever purchased was a one way charter flight from Sydney to London Gatwick with Britannia Airlines. I landed close to Christmas time, and was not disappointed. It snowed, I saw policemen pounding the Yorkshire pavements decked out with those funny hats. There were double decker buses, red telephone booths, pork pies, Cornish pasties, Yorkshire puddings, and one night I experienced a lock in with Bill Oddie at his local. For the next few years’ I travelled both the UK and Europe with a rucksack and a rail pass. I loved every minute of it.
I worked for a season in a Resort on Rhodes in the Greek Islands, spent time in a very fancy castle on the beach in Perros Guirec with my French family (a welcome relief to a 2 man tent), spent 3 nights and days awake drinking sangria and eating Tapas in Pamplona during the mad Fiesta de San Fermín – the running with the bulls. I sang my heart out at Robins Hood Bay in a small pub where folk music is still alive and kicking, hiked the Yorkshire Dales, had too many beers at the Munich Beer Festival, and didn’t see the Loch Ness Monster.
When I came home – all I wanted to do was more travel. So, I became a travel agent in the hope I could travel more! Not only did I travel to over 40 new countries, I really enjoyed the job. Some of my favourite places have been the Greek Islands, anywhere along the Mediterranean Coast, Southeast Asia and Africa, where I visited the Gorillas in Uganda, a true Gorillas in the Mist experience. I travel for many reasons, different foods, for adventure, and for new and unique experiences. To see people live their lives otherwise unknown.
These days though, travel looks a bit different, as I now have 3 kids plus a husband in tow. Still, we have managed together as a family New Zealand, Hawaii, The Cook Islands, Vietnam, Bali, Thailand and Singapore, and did enjoy a 4 month trip in the caravan up and down the East Coast of Australia.
The world is full of endless possibilities—and I can’t wait to explore them all.
